Current Care Guideline «Epilepsiat (aikuiset)»1 and Summary «Epilepsiat (aikuiset)»2 in Finnish

Exact diagnosis of the epilepsy type and etiology are the basis of the treatment. Patient education improves outcomes. The goal is complete long-term seizure control without significant adverse effects. Antiepileptic medication is usually initiated after the second epileptic seizure. If the patient does not respond to two appropriate drug schedules, patient should be evaluated for surgical treatment options. Some patients may even benefit from ketogenic diet. Pregnancy should always be planned.
