ABI mitataan yleensä olkavarren ja nilkan systolisesta painetasosta normaalia verenpainemansettia
ja verisuonidopplerlaitetta käyttäen. Tulos < 0,9 viittaa perifeeriseen valtimotautiin

Myös oireettomilla normaalia matalampi ABI ennustaa lisääntynyttä sepelvaltimotaudin,
